REFORMING OLD WEANING PRACTICE: NEW AND GENTLE WEANING PRODUCT

The patented solution, Ezee Wean was developed and is marketed by an experienced horsewoman and entrepreneur, Linda Bateman. Ms. Bateman’s vast experience in various equine disciplines and her passion for animals, especially for horses, motivates her t o search for better ways, and to look for kinder solutions. Her many years of observing horse behavior led Bateman to develop a new weaning aid, Ezee Wean. The new weaning method requires an attachment to be applied to a break-away style halter that is sized and fitted to the foal at an appropriate time, generally between four to six months of age. Ezee Wean, is to be wore 24/7, whenever the foal and mom are together and until the desire to nurse is gone.

The attachment is made of soft nylon belting, with flexible urethane prongs. The prong numbers vary based on age, size, and breed of the foal. The prongs are strategically located to bump mom in the flank area whenever the foal dips down and attempts to nurse, encouraging mom to say “no”. The weaning stress is virtually eliminated for both animals. The foal’s daily feeding routine may continue as usual. The foal is able to graze, consume hay, and drink water comfortably while wearing an Ezee Wean. Personal observation of the caregiver is needed to determine the optimal time to start the weaning process. Mother determines how sudden the nursing habit ends, just like in nature. The weaning process is completed when the foal develops self-confidence, generally four to six weeks.
